Diaper Cake!

When I was pregnant, one of my very dearest (and most creative) friends made me the most AMAZING diaper cake:
While I never planned to make one this amazing or complex, I was hoping to capture some of the wow-factor that this cake inspired in the guests at the shower.  Inspired by this,I decided to attempt to build a diaper cake.  I loosely followed these instructions.  Here's what I started with:
  • 1 large package Pampers Diapers, Size 1
  • 1 bottle baby bath wash
  • hair clips
  • foot-shaped teether
  • rubber bands
  • hot glue gun
  • pink ribbon
  • giraffe stuffed blanket thing
  • large piece of cardboard (not pictured)
Begin by placing the bottle of baby bath wash in the center of the card board.  Roll and rubber band approximately 40 diapers and arrange in three rings around the bottle.  Use a large rubber band to secure in place.
Next, roll and rubber band approximately 20 diapers and arrange in two rings around the bottle.  The top of the bottle will no longer be exposed, so wrap one diaper around the lid so that the top tier of the cake can be arranged around it.
Drape the stuffed giraffe blanket thing over the top tier and surround with eight rolled and rubber banded diapers.  Secure with a rubber band.
Measure three strips of ribbon, one for each tier, and secure using a glue gun.
Add embellishments - the hair clips and teether were all I could really fit!
And voila! I plan to wrap the cardboard at the base with pink tissue paper tomorrow before the shower!

Take Aways:
  • Fun, but a little time consuming.  It took about an hour.
  • The instructions said to purchase large rubber bands for each tier.  I didn't because I figured the ribbon would hold, but when I got to it, I realized I didn't want to risk it.  I ended up using head band rubber bands.  Next time I'll just buy the big rubber bands!
